The mere sight of some fossils can really make an impression on the viewer regardless of any prior interest in fossils or natural history. This REMARKABLE showpiece specimen is a perfect example of that. Substantial in size and with an incredible preparation of all its original spines protruding up off its shell, this spine-armored DROTOPS trilobite is a fantastic display fossil and one of the giants of the Devonian trilobites. Much more rare than the non-spiny variety, this is a SUPREME AND SUPER RARE example of a genuine SPINY Drotops known as Drotops armatus.
Unique to this example is the natural bi-color feature of a one side showing a olive gold hue and the other showing black. Another rare feature is the presence of both well-detailed eyes with superb multi-lens anatomy preserved. An excessive amount of hours went into the preparation of this specimen which resulted in all the spines being completely free of their matrix. Beware of substantially lower-priced fakes or genuine trilobites with fake spines. A common trick in the market is to take an ordinary, non-spiny Drotops and attach artificial spines. The fact this one is green and gold shows the matching color spines are authentic to this trilobite. This rare specimen features all authentic spines with repair. A large and impressive example with authentic spines and a fantastic, straight pose exhibiting great anatomical detail.
