SONORA SUNRISE CHRYSOCOLLA CUPRITE

Sonora Sunrise Chrysocolla Cuprite

Sonora Sunrise, also known as Chrysocolla Cuprite, is rare gemstone that was only discovered as recent as 2006 in the Milpillas Mine, located in the Sonora State of Mexico.  The gem is famous for its dramatic shades of red, orange, and blue, representative of the colors of a desert sunrise, hence the name.  Sonora Sunrise is a composite rock, primarily composed of cuprite (deep red), chrysocolla (blue-green), and tenorite (black).  Additional mineral traces of chalcotrichite (orange-red) and occasionally malachite (green) can also be found in the stone.

The main deposit of Sonora Sunrise is the Milpillas Mine, located in the Mexican state of Sonora.  The mine was opened in 2006 but only 5 years later, in 2011, the mine drastically curtailed its production of the gem, now making top-quality specimens extremely rare and highly sought after  by collectors, lapidary artists and jewelry designers.
