It does NOT get any rarer than this! In our 32 year career, this is only the second time we have ever seen a fossil portion of a rare sail spine of the Spinosaurus dinosaur. It is the first time we have seen a specimen in person. Even in the past decades of travel to the Sahara, we have never encountered a fossil spine section of the dinosaur's sail.
The Spinosaurus is famous for its unique large sail on its back, a feature from the unusually long dorsal spines of the thoracic vertebrae. This ULTRA-RARE fossil offered here, is the distal end portion of a PRIMARY spine. It features a medial ridge that was likely an anchor point for flesh or fat. This medial spine can be seen in some of the vertebrae in the scientific sketch below. Spinosaurus fossil sail spines are so rare that little is known and the complete array of the anatomy of the spines has never been found, making the exact anatomy a mystery. This piece may add an important piece to the puzzle showing a more dramatic medial ridge than the ones illustrated in the vintage drawing below.
This is without question, one of the rarest Spinosaurus fossils you could hope for as the Spinosaurus is most famous for the giant sail on its back. An elusive fossil portion of that spine is a "Holy Grail" fossil of the species. NO REPAIR OR FABRICATION.
