This is a beautiful, COLLECTOR GRADE Megalodon fossil shark tooth with intense chatoyance and reflectivity. The high luster is NOT from machine polishing. Machine grinding and polishing a tooth destroys its value as a fossil specimen.
The main color on the labial side is a warm ivory white with copper red brown mottling and lines. The lingual side shows dramatic copper red mottling. Red is the most prized and rarest of river teeth and this tooth shows some fantastic hues and St. Mary's River spotting that makes this tooth a prize collector example. Both sides show strong chatoyance in bright light giving the tooth a pearly luster on the display side. This is a LOWER jaw tooth hence the narrow blade profile. Lower jaw teeth served to stab and hold prey like a fork holds a steak, while the upper broad-shaped teeth would serve as the knife, moving back and forth to slice off chunks of meat of any unfortunate prey. Serration detail on this tooth is excellent. The enamel and root are in exceptional dense preservation. This specimen has NO REPAIR AND NO RESTORATION.
Divers will tell you that megalodon teeth like this are extremely difficult to find in today's waters. This spectacular specimen is loaded with so many features desired by advanced Megalodon tooth collectors. Current and increasing future demand will never be satisfied by the dwindling numbers of the truly top grade specimens such as this beauty, hence their constantly increasing prices each year.
Megalodon teeth found in rivers are almost always heavily eroded and worn from the high energy environment in which they were subjected to. They usually have dull, sand-blasted enamel, peeling back from the core. The roots are often damaged. While we strictly avoid Megalodon teeth with restoration or repair, Caveat emptor as some Megalodon teeth in dealers' inventories in the larger sizes and "seemingly" fine qualities, have repair or restoration and this is not often disclosed to the buyer accurately. Paleo Direct gets all its teeth directly from divers and cleans every specimen in our own on-premises lab facility.
