Product Description
This is the entire front portion of a skull from the massive EUROPEAN STEPPE BISON (WISENT) of the final Ice Age, aka Bison priscus. On the rare occasion that a fossil skull is found in Europe, almost always, this portion is entirely missing or severely damaged. The rare pre-maxilla bones are RARELY seen intact. This is a rare fossil showing seldom seen anatomy of the skull. It would make an incredible reference specimen as is, to identify wisent fossils from aurochs, but if a high-grade skull needed restoration, this is the "holy grail" piece MOST OFTEN needed to restore a fossil bison skull to completion.
As of this listing, we have also listed a nearly identical specimen but from an Aurochs here, an extinct Ice Age animal from Europe of which complete skulls are considerably more rare than bison. That specimen AND this specimen would be a perfect reference specimen set to identify the differences of Aurochs and Bison (Wisent) fossils as they are very similar but having identical anatomy specimens of both animals would provide and INVALUABLE reference resource of authentic specimens for comparison, display and education.
The specimen has been cleaned and sealed in our lab. All molars are original and there is NO REPAIR and NO FABRICATION. A perfect fossil to display alongside Early Man artifacts as these animals were both hunted and worshipped by prehistoric humans.
This classic Pleistocene beast is also known as the STEPPE WISENT. It is important to emphasize that it is of EUROPEAN Ice Age origin rather than North American or Siberian. Furthermore, this is a TRUE FOSSIL from the days of Europe's last Ice Age when Neanderthals and Cro-Magnon Man hunted these beasts and memorialized their hunts and reverence for these creatures in their famous cave paintings. It is also important to note that this is a REAL FOSSIL found deep in the Pleistocene Period river gravel deposits.Solid and stabilized for safe handling and display.
