Made of fired clay, this is a spectacular Pre-Columbian four-hole disk flute (ocarina) with elaborate decoration on the top. It shows a design in the center of what appears to be the snarling jaws of a jaguar baring its teeth with tongue out. It is still playable and different sounds can be made by covering each (or a series) of the holes. The mouthpiece is on the side edge and it is held in both hands when played. The design is similar to Pre-Columbian Western Mexico cultures.
There is minor loss to some small parts of this RARE piece but it is UNBROKEN and COMPLETE WITH NO RESTORATION. Long ceramic flutes and round bulbous ocarinas are fairly common but this type of musical instrument is scarce. Furthermore, this is the most elaborate one we have encountered. Playing this instrument is transcendent - you are hearing the same music that was heard and played nearly 1000 years ago! HIGHLY RECOMMENDED and the only one we have ever had to offer for sale. An intriguing piece!
