This is an EXTREMELY RARE large shell applique of a jaguar face from the Pre-Columbian Chavin Culture of South America. Pre-dating the Moche Culture, many of the gods and imagery of the Chavin can be found to continue in the later Moche civilization. A dominant figure in this cult civilization was a jaguar man-god which was similar to deity worshipped by the Olmecs of Mesoamerica. The jaguar god was the primary deity of the supernatural world.
The jaguar face shows a snarling expression with stylized teeth protruding from the bottom. The preservation on this piece is fantastic with the shell retaining much of its irridescent features and reflectivity. Heavy mineral deposits attest to its authenticity and age. Drilled holes where it was attached, are still intact and the entire piece is complete and unbroken. A fantastic example of Pre-Columbian body adornment and jewelry of a rare, preserved organic object. Stable enough to even be used today in a modern piece of jewelry! 100% ORIGINAL WITH NO REPAIR, 'AS FOUND'.
