This is one of the most impressive fossil Sperm whale teeth we have offered in 24 years of selling online, and it happens to be the last of the fossil whale teeth we will ever offer. It is a SUPERB large fossil Odontocete tooth from a prehistoric Sperm Whale of the family Physeteridae, from the Miocene/ Pliocene Period, the days of the Megalodon shark. The surface detail and density of this tooth is truly amazing but what is truly unique is its color! The root is complete with a slightly concave end. This tooth was found buried in a layer of clay which resulted in the unusual mottled light tan and brown hues from the tannins in the river. The burial protected this premium prehistoric whale fossil tooth from the damaging environment. It is so dense and has such a perfectly preserved surface!!!
Fossil Sperm whale teeth in this condition of completeness are rare and far scarcer than Megalodon teeth. Unlike sharks, toothed whales did not replace their teeth hence the RARITY of fossil whale teeth! Finding a complete specimen with full crown and complete, undamaged root is VERY rare. This amazing tooth is robust with a heavy pointed crown, designed to sustain the extreme bite force these predators exerted on their teeth as they bit down and crushed their prey. The tip is complete with light natural feeding wear. A prize like this deserves a place in the finest fossil collections of apex predator fossils.
Just as T. rex ruled its domain in its day, the Sperm Whale ruled the ancient seas and shared the title of "king" with the Megalodon shark in the Miocene-Pliocene Period. Surviving the extinction of Megalodon, even now the Sperm whale has no rival. The Sperm whale is and was the largest of all the toothed whales. Male Sperm whales can grow to lengths in excess of 60 feet making them THE largest predator living in the sea today. They are truly the kings of the ocean realm.
This fossil is perfect to display alongside a Megalodon shark tooth collection as this creature would have shared the same waters and served as the main food source for the largest and most dangerous shark that ever lived, the Megalodon shark.
