This is one of the finest European Neolithic flake tool cores we could ever offer. Famously known as "Livres de Beurre" cores, it was fashioned out of one of the most famous flint sources of the European Neolithic Period - the golden honey toned from the well-known site of Le Grand Pressigny in France. This is a complete and masterfully shaped large blade tool core that this culture and region is famous for. You can see the longitudinal ridges from the strips of stone the blade cores produced. These long flakes were then fashioned into large blades and daggers that have come to be prime hallmarks of this period of European history.
This tool core is COMPLETE, INTACT AND UNDAMAGED FROM PLOW OR FROST. Many Neolithic tool cores are incomplete and broken or show obvious modern plow damage. This specimen was dug from a subterranean level and was therefore, protected from any damage or exposure. It is in impeccable condition and tool collection should be without one fine and complete (when possible to locate!) European Neolithic tool core. This is, after all, the "bank" of the stone tool-maker or first man-made resource from which all flake tools were first struck from. This core shows supreme retouching as the core was kept in a desired shape through subsequent removal of flakes, to control the shape and type flake that would be produced from it. Wonderfully aesthetic and LARGE! A specimen for the finest display of Neolithic tools of Europe!
This Neolithic artifact was originally collected in the Le Grand Pressigny region of France. It has been flaked and used by Neolithic humans who once inhabited the region. For an extensive history that dates all the way back to the Acheulian Period in Europe, flint was collected from deposits in Le Grand-Pressigny in Southern Touraine. In the Neolithic Period, large mines were dug and worked here with the flint being traded far distances away. The flint is unmistakable in its appearance - a rich golden yellow tone with slight translucence. Most famous from the area during the Neolithic were the massive blade cores prepared called Livres de Beurre (pounds of butter) by archaeologists for the appearance. From these cores, gloriously large flint knives were struck that in some cases, exceeded lengths of 12 inches! The entire prehistoric site of Le Grand Pressigny is scientifically important and was one of the most active epicenters of trade and habitation for an extraordinary length of time in human prehistory.
NO MODERN DAMAGE, NO REPAIR AND NO RESTORATION. Complete CHOICE GRADE Neolithic tool cores from the Le Grand Pressigny are not often seen for public sale. They represent an excellent opportunity to acquire a genuine stone tool artifact from some of Europe's first farming peoples! Legally collected decades ago and acquired direct from the original collector. From an old Dutch private collection.
