This authentic stone tool was fashioned by Neanderthals over 40,000 years ago out of flint and discovered in the world famous region of Dordogne, France, considered to be the "Capitol of Prehistory". The site this specimen was excavated from is now closed and protected by the government. The fact that this archeological site is off-limits to any collecting, makes this wonderful stone tool artifact exceedingly rare and desirable! Because collecting these artifacts has been off-limits for decades, genuine fine grade Mousterian Neanderthal tools such as this specimen are most certain to continue to appreciate in value as time goes on.
This is a superb MOUSTERIAN TOOL CORE. A tool core was the "bank" for the prehistoric flake tool maker. It was the main raw material piece that was carefully shaped and from which, flakes were struck that were used to make tools. When the cores are used up or "exhausted", they are often simply discarded. This tool core is large enough to have still produced some flakes. It comes from a rare open air site that was believed to be a warm-season Neanderthal camp. You can see obvious flake removal on all faces of this specatcular specimen. You can see evidence of hammering on the edges where main flakes were struck from and the core was shaped. The flint color is typical for Le Grand Pressigny and not typical for the area so the tool's discovery locale indicates that flint sources were traded and carried by Neanderthals at distances beyond the local camps. Intact original burial sediment is present and visible in the hinge fractures when viewed under magnification - a trait ONLY found in authentic prehistoric tools. Heavy burial patina makes for a rich, warm gold and orange hue. A superb example from this famous region! NO RESTORATION, REPAIR OR MODERN DAMAGE.
This prehistoric flake tool artifact came from a large Dutch collection that was formed numerous decades ago. The collection comprised tools found in rock shelters with other numerous tools and some broken fossil animal bones, mostly likely fractured for the prized marrow inside, a valuable Neanderthal food source. Our fortunate purchase of this private collection from the original excavator allows us to offer this rare specimen.
