Product Description
From a very old German private collection, this rare Permian species of Palaeoniscus fish (Palaeoniscus freieslebeni) is an uncommon find on today's fossil market. The quarry closed over 30 years ago and any collecting or digging has been forbidden since nearly that time, as well. This is a rare primitive fish from these famous deposits called the Kupferschiefer or Copper Shales.
The color is a natural copper orange and black on this original shale. Back has been reinforced for safety of the specimen. These were fragile fish and seldom do you find good quality detail but this example has scale detail and skeletal detail of the skull evident. Recommended for a diverse primitive fish fossil exhibit, this and the other specimen we are simultaneously listing are the only two examples that existed in the collection we acquired.
