BRECCIATED MOOKAITE

Brecciated Mookaite

Brecciated Mookaite is a brecciated radiolarite called Windalia radiolarite.  It is mined from deposits near the Kennedy Ranges about 160 km inland from the Carnarvon Basin region in Western Australia.  The name "mookaite" is derived from the Aboriginal language, meaning "running waters," a poetic reference to Mooka Creek, its site of discovery. While "mookaite" is its most common name, this gem is also referred to as Australian jasper or mookite.

Brecciated Mookaite is a silicified sedimentary rock formed from a combination of silica, white clay, and fossilized radiolarians, tiny marine organisms.  These components fossilized under marine conditions during the Cretaceous period, approximately 120 million years ago.  This process produced a gemstone of remarkable visual richness, characterized by vibrant hues ranging from bright yellow to deep red, occasionally featuring shades of purple and dark brown.  Silica bearing solutions moved through the rocks creating hydraulic pressure that has fractured then re-cemented them into an amazing mosaic that makes Brecciated Mookaite highly valued for jewelry, carvings, and decorative objects.
