Product Description
This pair is THE RAREST of pieces that came from a very old private collection of an Orthodox priest who originally collected these pieces in the 1950's on the Isle of Rhodes. These are a MATCHED AND ORIGINAL ANCIENT SET of Greek Kyathos dippers most likely used in the art and pleasure of mixing wine with water and other substances, a famous method of wine mixing and consumption once practiced by the Ancient Greeks. Authentic ancient Greek pottery is rare compared to later Roman pieces but to be able to acquire an original set of two pieces is something BEYOND extraordinary and advanced collectors should take note of this extremely rare opportunity. Only ONCE have we ever seen an identical design as these two pieces. The form is unusual and may be unique to a local ancient Greek vintner or region. Both pieces were found in remarkable condition and we received them from the collection in an un-restored state with repair only. The smaller kyathos was complete with only two main cracks and a chip on the rim. The larger one had a very small 1" crescent piece missing on the rim edge and a portion of the handle was missing. Other than this, the specimens retain their original black glazing over the red-ware ceramic and original soil and mineral encrustations providing irrefutable proof of their age and authenticity. Whether you are building a spectacular collection of rare ancient pieces or are a wine aficionado wishing to exhibit one of the most fascinating sets of ancient wine-drinking artifacts, this set should be given a close look!
