SPECIAL NOTE: The current laws in this region of Germany now forbid the collection of these remarkable fossils. Such legislation has permanently ended the supply of such magnificent specimens such as this one being offered here. This rare example comes from an old German private collection and was collected long ago before the ban was enacted. With digging in the formation now off-limits, these rare German Permian fossils are sure to appreciate in value and become increasingly difficult to acquire.
This is a rare example of supreme soft body tissue fossilization from the Permian Period. The large rock plate shows two exceptionally well-preserved amphibians of two different types. Found naturally associated together are an unusually LARGE Micromelerpeton amphibian as well as an Apateon, the smaller amphibian above. Both are complete with skeletal remains on the rock as well as EXTREMELY RARE presence of soft body tissue details. Both fossils have been sealed with a stabilizer to preserve the fragile bones and skin that is preserved on the rock, exposed after the rock plates were split.
These amphibians once inhabited the Permian swamps of what is now Western Germany. Since the deposit has since been closed to collecting, locating an exceptional specimen on the market has become quite difficult so an example like this is a unique offer. You can see rare instances of bones in the body and limbs including finger digits. The preservation of soft body tissue from this species dates back to 280 million years ago which is quite impressive. The plate broke so there are repairs running through the fossils but other than these areas, the rest of both specimens are 100% original.
The back of the rock has been epoxy reinforced and has a built-in metal hanger so that this plate can be hung on a wall as it is shown in the first photo.
