This is a choice grade fossil carnassial tooth of a large adult Pleistocene jaguar, Panthera onca. One of the primary weapons of the Jaguar, is the large carnassial "meat-shearing" tooth. It is this tooth that the cat uses to bite down on a carcass and cut off large portions of flesh when consuming its prey. This rare specimen is in immaculate preservation and with a amazingly well-preserved dense root. The crown appears sinister with its perfectly preserved lustrous midnight black enamel. This is a very rare fossil for an advanced collection but it would also make an excellent candidate for a jeweler to mount into a "never-to-be-forgotten" pendant to wear on a necklace! It is very difficult to find ANY carnassial teeth of large prehistoric cats but this one is amongst the best you could ask for! NO REPAIR and NO RESTORATION of any kind! Tooth is AS FOUND. NO REPAIR and NO RESTORATION.
Pleistocene cat fossils from North America are amongst the most prized by advanced collectors. Not only is the attraction to these animals driven by the romance of their fierce predatory nature, but fossils of prehistoric felines are very rare and seldom available for sale. High quality and intact specimens without restoration are even MORE rare. Felids represent many of the apex predators of their day in prehistory just like today. As mostly solitary hunters, their fossil remains are amongst the rarest of all vertebrate fossils simply due to the low numbers of the animals when alive in the wild.
