Stone elbow bracelets in famous Hombori marble stone have been made and worn since the Neolithic Period of the West Sahel of North Africa. They were worn by men above the elbow, and believed to impart supernatural protection in war and other dangerous endeavors. This exceptional, robust specimen dates to the 18th century and shows excellent workmanship typical of the time and way these were made. The deep black and dark gray marble is traversed with natural white vein inclusions, giving it an impressive and interesting display. While the outside is smooth polished, the inside is crudely cut and shaped.
Hombori is an ancient town of the Dogon People in Mali. The region is known for a unique marble of all black, or black and dark gray with white veins. Hombori marble is mined by the local villagers at quarry sites owned by each village chief. The elbow bracelets that were made were worn by the men of the Dogon, Songhai, Fulani, Mossi, Frafra and Tuareg peoples.
Original mineral deposits and patina are intact and deep in the ancient grinding marks and micro-crevices - traits ONLY found in AUTHENTIC specimens.
