Product Description
This is one of the more unusual squid fossil specimens we have handled or seen. For many reasons, it is rare and not anything at all like the majority of squid fossils offered on the common market. We collected this rare specimen many years ago from a site in north central Germany and just recently got around to perform the finish preparation work. The squid fossil is VERY large and represents only the body portion with no preserved arms. The entire body is shown in WHITE and a flare edge of the mantle can be seen which we have not ever seen before in a squid fossil. The ink sack is very large and completely intact still with a good amount of fossilized ink still in its original location! The darkened canal with remnants of ink are also present. All the color you see is original and natural as the fossil was found with only cracks filled and the color matched in those regions only. The fossil was collected in two main pieces and necessitated a single crack fill across the rock and across part of the end of the squid body.
This was the only fossil from this site we have ever seen or collected and its size, white color and unusual mantle and ink sack preservation make it a highly desirable squid fossil that would be a top collection piece for displaying fossils not typically seen for sale. The shale it is on is a very thick piece and had dehydration cracks that we filled but we left alone the cracks visible in the center and delicate portions of the squid body to preserve its natural integrity and demonstrate the original nature of the intact RARE white color to the fossil. This is one of the finest and most unusual squid fossils we could offer and it is most definitely recommended for collectors and institutions that can be proud to display NON-commercial type specimens.
