Product Description
The skull of the horse is quite delicate and VERY SELDOM does the skull survive in fossil deposits, from the Pleistocene Period. The most common Ice Age fossils found are isolated teeth. Because the horse has remained unchanged from before until after the Ice Age, the nature and source of how it was found is important to separate it from modern horse remains. This specimen was found in the Siberian Tundra where other animals of prehistory are routinely discovered such as Woolly Mammoth and Woolly Rhino. This is a VERY RARE opportunity to acquire a PLEISTOCENE specimen from the Ice Age, that is as complete as it is. To date, it is only the second Pleistocene horse skull we have offered in our 32 year history and the most complete.
A complete and intact Ice Age fossil horse skull is an EXTREMELY RARE acquisition, ideal for very advanced private collections, or institutions. The molars are all original and still attached as found with the only missing portion being the pre-maxilla. Because of every other impeccably preserved detail, we opted to not restore this example and keep it in the original condition in which it was found, which is truly remarkable. Very delicate bones and processes are still intact that normally are destroyed or lost. 100% AUTHENTIC WITH NO FABRICATION OR COMPOSITING OF TEETH. COMPLETE original dentition in perfect condition and intact.
HISTORY
The horse played a very important part in the lives of prehistoric humans in both, Neanderthals, Cro-Magnons and most probably, Homo erectus. Prehistoric carvings and cave paintings in Europe show the horse well-represented with other Ice Age beasts such as the Woolly Mammoth, Woolly Rhinoceros, Aurochs, Bison and Cave Lion. It is highly likely that prehistoric humans not only marveled at the beauty of the horse as they watched them roam free across the European continent, but relied on their hide and meat to survive. To this day, horse meat is a delicacy in the same regions in Europe where they were formerly hunted by prehistoric humans.
This would make a phenomenal display piece laying alongside primitive hunting weapons of prehistoric man! A great compliment to a primitive man stone tool and weapon collection as these magnificent and seemingly magical animals lived in the same environments as prehistoric humans, played a vital role for resources in human survival during the last Ice Age and were hunted / revered by both Neanderthal man and Cro-Magnon man.
