The form and execution of this extraordinary BIFACIAL MICOQUIEN handaxe was fashioned by a Neanderthal in the Early Middle Paleolithic Period. It is extraordinarily large with a stunning white patina to the flint. With all the prehistoric sites in France closed and protected for many decades now, old European collection examples such as this, continue to demonstrate strong and steady price appreciation over the years. This specific hand axe is without question, THE FINEST AND LARGEST FRENCH MICOQUIEN HAND AXE WE HAVE EVER OFFERED FOR SALE! Hand axes of this caliber from France are considered the rarest and most prized artifacts of the Neanderthals!
The Micoquien is an early middle paleolithic industry, that is found in the Eemian and in an early episode of the Würm glaciation (about 130,000 to 60,000 BCE). The Micoquien is distinguished technologically by the appearance of distinctly asymmetrical bifaces. Its discoverer was the archeologist and art trader Otto Hauser who named the typology after the site the tools were first discovered, at the site in La Micoque, Dordogne, France. La Micoque is a site crucial for understanding the early Palaeolithic period. It was quickly the target of numerous excavations; the last ones on date having been completed in 1995. Located at the bottom of a cliff, this encampment has a large stratigraphy of about 10 meters that cover 300,000 years of human occupation, including the first traces of humans in the region.
This large prize example is truly an INVESTMENT CLASS piece. It shows the FINEST skilled workmanship and boasts of a highly aesthetic white patina to the flint. A TRUE PRIZE in every way of a prehistoric Neanderthal artifact that CANNOT be improved on!!! The entire perimeter shows expert Neanderthal secondary retouch to execute a stunningly well-made, profile. Delicate pointed tip is still intact and unbroken which is EXTREMELY RARE for specimens like this. The entire surface features a rich patina and mineralized soil sheen indicating extreme age in burial. Authenticity evidenced by the presence of minerals deep in these microscopic crevices. NO RESTORATION, REPAIR OR MODERN DAMAGE.
Fine quality Neanderthal hand axes are rare and often move from one private collection to the next as most sites are now depleted, destroyed, built over and all are protected by law forbidding modern day digging. It is probable by simple logistics, that over time, high grade archeological tools will most definitely appreciate as collector demand continues to outpace the finite supply circulating amongst collectors that buy pieces and never resell. Investment aside, no Paleolithic collection should be without representative tools of one of the most famous primitive humans in history!
