This is a SPECTACULAR bifacial CORDATE Mousterian hand axe of the finest possible quality and condition. Furthermore, it was made of a highly-prized quartzite that is occasionally seen in NW Paleolithic tools - a stunning RED AND YELLOW TIGER STRIPE QUARTZITE! The technology is actually MOUSTERIAN IN ACHEULIAN TRADITION (MTA or MAT). It possesses traits of the earlier Acheulian Period such as the faceted palm grip on the proximal end, but at only 3.5 inches in length, it matches the typical size of other Mousterian examples found in North Africa.
The thin chopping tip is unbroken and is unusually sharp and entirely intact AS MADE! The workmanship and ergonomic design when held is spectacular. The form and execution of this extraordinary hand axe must be held to be appreciated - quartzite is extremely difficult to flake and shape on a hand axe this small!!! Unlike their much larger predecessors of the Sahara during the Acheulian, Mousterian handaxes are much smaller in comparison. In "as found" ORIGINAL condition with NO REPAIR AND NO RESTORATION.
