Without question, this is THE RAREST AND FINEST MAMMOTH BONE WE EVER OFFERED. Beating all odds of probability, this is a COMPLETE WITH BOTH UNOSSIFIED JOINTS limb bone from the Wooly Mammoth, known scientifically as Mammuthus primigenius. This is a RIGHT LOWER ARM BONE or ULNA and it is an extraordinary specimen with spectacular bone detail and fully preserved, dense end joint surfaces. It comes from a sub-adult mammoth so the joints did not fuse, yet. Despite its scientific-grade preservation, what is amazing is that BOTH unfused joints were also found with the bone. This specimen was collected in a river gravel mine and amazingly, the bucket working at depth, must have hit a fully articulated skeleton considering these joints were still with the bone. The bucket brought up the bone and also, the joints! The light hue to the bone shows this was a deeply buried fossil, never exposed to the river and possibly, buried in a clay pocket, to be so well preserved. Every minute natural detail is 100% intact. Visible is scarring on the surface where muscle and tendons were attached as well as natural pore anatomy in the bone. Most mammoth bones are found in pieces - rarely are they discovered in complete or even near complete condition. Seldom are the seen on the market and when they are, they are heavily reconstructed and restored to make a complete bone. This very rare specimen has NO REPAIR OR RESTORATION. It has been stabilized only with a PVA consolidant.
This bone would be an ideal candidate for a museum Ice Age exhibit to demonstrate mammal osteology and mammoth growth / maturation. Dramatic bone grain and detail along with its unique anatomy makes this a perfect bone to demonstrate the unique features of the Mammoth. This specimen would be most ideal for casting a scientific model for a touch exhibit for teaching!
Perfect to exhibit with Primitive Man tools and artifacts since these beasts played such an important part in so many ways of the lives of Neanderthals and Cro-Magnons. True European Woolly mammoth fossils are far more scarce and rarer than Russian (Siberian) fossils and fetch higher market prices because of this.
