Product Description
Despite our company being located in one of North America's richest vertebrate fossil-bearing regions, this is the first time we have had the rare pleasure of offering any PREHISTORIC SEAL fossils of Florida. To call this specimen RARE is an understatement. It is a complete fossil humerus (upper arm) bone of a member of the phocine seals and dates back to the Miocene / Pliocene Period. The seal it came from was a sub-adult so the articulating joints on the distal and proximal ends were not fully ossified. The distal end joint has been rejoined back to the bone because of this but there is no other repair or fabrication on this incredibly rare fossil bone.
Bone detail is superb with every anatomical aspect intact and well-preserved. Pinniped post-cranial material like this from Florida is ULTRA SCARCE and finding another specimen like this is most unlikely. An ideal addition for highly diversified, advanced collectors.
