This is a very rare specimen as it is an original full mandible (both halves!) with COMPLETE ORIGINAL DENTITION still attached as found! Even for reference alone, this would make a great educational anatomy specimen for comparing prehistoric horses of Europe. The bone is missing the anterior and posterior regions but most of the jaw is present. It is 100% original bone with only a single repair to a break near the front joint incurred when it was retrieved from the dredge. While many "complete" fossils are actually a composite of bone pieces from multiple animals, this is NOT such a piece and it was found and brought up intact so all you see is original from the same prehistoric horse. The teeth were all found still embedded in the jaw so none of them have been repaired or replaced with other teeth to complete the array. The teeth and bone are darkened and the bone has been stabilized as some portions of the jaw is fragile. There is very little of this jaw that is missing and this would make a perfect candidate to restore and use as a lower jaw for a skull, should one choose to do so with an ORIGINAL complete mandible rather than using two halves of different horses. There is some pitting and environmental erosion on the surfaces in areas of the teeth but such a piece as this is rare enough and therefore, an extremely impressive display specimen, nonetheless. NO FABRICATION OR COMPOSITING OF UNRELATED MANDIBLES OR TEETH. Chewing surfaces of all teeth are in IMMACULATE PRESERVATION!
Despite what one might think, seldom are Ice Age horse fossils from the European continent available for purchase. Horse fossils from North America and Russia (Siberia) are common but true European Pleistocene deposits provide few horse fossils for the market. As a perfect compliment to European Ice Age fossil collections, this interesting specimen makes for an uncommon addition.
This would make a phenomenal display piece laying alongside primitive hunting weapons of prehistoric man! A great compliment to a primitive man stone tool and weapon collection as these animals lived alongside humans, played a vital role for resources in human survival during the last Ice Age and were hunted / revered by both Neanderthal man and Cro-Magnon man.
