This is an incredible example of the a nearly complete molar tooth from a prehistoric extinct elephant called Gomphotherium sp.. This giant of the last Ice Age was a bizarre prehistoric ancestor to the modern day elephant. Fossil teeth are very rare of this animal but this one is especially rare because it is UNERUPTED and had not yet formed its roots nor had emerged yet to be used for chewing. Because of this, the bizarre anatomy of EVERY cusp is perfectly shown in an unworn state. This makes this a VERY valuable tooth for research or study as well as a display piece to demonstrate the unique properties of teeth from these extinct beasts. Finding complete, unbroken fossil teeth are very rare of this animal with most discoveries being only partial pieces of the teeth. Specimens showing the complete crown are NOT common which makes this a VERY valuable tooth for research or study as well as a display piece to demonstrate the unique properties of teeth from these extinct beasts.
The enamel is in the finest condition, jet black and naturally lustrous. The tooth has not been painted or coated with any artificial sealers or colors. Rarely will you have a chance to find an UNWORN and UNERUPTED tooth from a Gomphothere. Of all the prehistoric elephant teeth from North America we could recommend, this one would be a must! A small portion of the base on one end is missing but otherwise, this tooth is perfect!
