Product Description
This is a fantastic natural concretion piece that was broken open to reveal a rare multi-colored iridescent fossil ammonite of the Discoscaphites specie. In the same rock, there are a multitude of gastropod fossils. This fossil dates to the final days of the dinosaurs in the Late Cretaceous. These ammonites and sea snails lived in the sea of the same time and region as famous dinosaurs such as Tyrannosaurus rex, as well as the horned dinosaurs and duck-billed dinosaurs.
The Fox Hills Formation is most famous for producing ammonites with a rare, colorful iridescence to their preserved shells. Not all fossils from this formation produce the colored shells. Most are plain white. The rarest are the colorful ones such as featured here. The ammonite shows incredible detail and if you look closely, even INTERIOR detail!
These fossils are not rare unless they show color as these do. Most of the ammonites found are white or mostly white. The rarest are found in this multi-colored iridescent form!
