This authentic stone tool was fashioned by Neanderthals over 40,000 years ago out of flint and discovered in the world famous region of Dordogne, France, considered to be the "Capitol of Prehistory". The site this specimen was excavated from is now closed and protected by the government. The fact that this archeological site is off-limits to any collecting, makes this wonderful stone tool artifact exceedingly rare and desirable! Because collecting these artifacts has been off-limits for decades, genuine fine grade Mousterian Neanderthal tools such as this specimen are most certain to continue to appreciate in value as time goes on.
This rare Neanderthal flint tool is classified as a BORER / AWL. It probably is one of the best Mousterian examples of this tool we have ever offered! The worked boring process can be plainly seen on this tool. Borers are noted by the presence of a small worked protrusion on the flake tool that is used to drill or open holes in materials such as bone, wood, leather or ivory. Here we see in intact boring process on the flake with excellent workmanship. Because of its length, this tool was likely used to pierce animal hides for clothing, crafts or shelter. Intact iron deposits and long-term patina on all flint surfaces testify to its authenticity and lack of any modern alterations. A superb example from this Neanderthal world region! NO RESTORATION, REPAIR OR MODERN DAMAGE.
