Product Description
Resembling nothing less spectacular than a massive Tyrannosaurus rex tooth with root, this giant and complete fossil tooth comes from an equal apex predator of prehistory - the massive Sperm whale. Despite our company being based near the richest fossil deposits of this type, and directly sourcing amazing fossils from local divers for 21 years, we have never seen a fossil Sperm whale tooth of this type, with this preservation and of this size. The Sperm whale Physeter sp. is the largest of the toothed whales (Odontocetes). This fossil tooth dates back to the Miocene/ Pliocene Period.
As the finest and most impressive fossil Sperm whale tooth we have ever offered or handled, this specimen is a must for a display of ancient apex predators! This massive tooth is magic to handle. Its heavy weight and giant proportions are a treat to experience in person. The crown is complete with natural feeding wear and some erosion. The root is complete and even includes the hollow wall end. Usually, when these teeth are found, they are in such horrible shape with broken roots and completely worn down crowns. This specimen is so rare and nice that it would be a perfect candidate for a fossil casting company due to it rare size and quality. A prize like this deserves a place in the finest fossil collections. It is truly a breathtaking fossil that you will never forget once you handle it!
Fossil Sperm whale teeth in this condition of completeness are rare and far scarcer than Megalodon teeth. Unlike sharks, toothed whales did not replace their teeth hence the RARITY of fossil whale teeth! Finding a complete specimen with full crown and complete, undamaged root is VERY rare. This amazing tooth is heavy and massive, representing the extreme bite force these predators must have exerted on their teeth by its enormous solid root.
Just as T. rex ruled its domain in its day, the Sperm Whale ruled the ancient seas and shared the title of "king" with the Megalodon shark in the Miocene-Pliocene Period. Surviving the extinction of Megalodon, even now the Sperm whale has no rival. The Sperm whale is and was the largest of all the toothed whales. Male Sperm whales can grow to lengths in excess of 60 feet making them THE largest predator living in the sea today. They are truly the kings of the ocean realm.
This fossil is perfect to display alongside a Megalodon shark tooth collection as this creature would have shared the same waters and served as the main food source for the largest and most dangerous shark that ever lived, the Megalodon shark.
