CLICK HERE TO LEARN MORE ABOUT AMMONITES
Measuring 25.25 inches across, this is THE LARGEST Perisphinctes sp. massive ammonite we have ever offered from this region. It comes from the Cretaceous deposits of the coastal village of Agadir, Morocco. Its narrow cross-sectional profile is typical for this genus and region. The shell surface of the ammonite shows embedded fossil belemnites - squid-like creatures that died after the ammonite died. These bullet-shaped belemnite fossils are the former internal skeleton which is what remains after they filled the empty shell, later becoming fossils, themselves.
At this size, this is an incredible rarity - most often, these ammonites are found in sizes ranging from a tea cup saucer to a salad plate. The pigment is natural with traces of orange-yellow limonite mineral. Only very rarely are genuine specimens found in this size class. This is an especially fine example with NATURAL chamber detail on the back side attesting to its authenticity (SEE PHOTO ABOVE). The display side required regrinding to the chamber detail upon completion of matrix removal but the anatomy and detail is accurate and correct for the species. This ammonite was found in several pieces upon discovery and required repair. Overall, this is a spectacular display of prehistoric ocean life when T. rex and other famous dinosaurs were walking the earth. Beware of completely carved fakes that offer no trace of original chamber detail on the reverse side as this is a problem in the market today. Ammonites that occur this size naturally are RARE!
With its three-dimensional form and texture, this ammonite specimen will bring any event to a halt when displayed. It is in a class all its own, not only desired by collectors, but treasured by interior designers and architects alike for incorporating into a stunning display. Wonderfully detailed. An exquisite specimen for such a rare size and an absolute "show-stopper"! We highly recommend this magnificent giant fossil to either augment a collection or serve as a monumental interior design piece. The pictures with the hand indicate the real magnitude of this enormous specimen.
