This is a much lesser found handaxe than any other type of the Acheulian Tradition in the northern Sahara deposits. It is a CLEAVER bifacial hand axe with a narrow, chisel-shaped chopping edge on its distal end. No hand axe collection should be without at least one representation of this unique type. Most ingenious and as proof of the intellect of Homo ergaster (the Sahara version of Homo erectus), is the incorporation of a natural fold in the stone which was used as a finger grip when held in the left hand. You must hold this specimen in your hand to experience this and it will be quite remarkable when you do! A wonderful demonstration of the intelligence of humans that we have been led to believe by science were not as advanced as us!!! Superb secondary flaking workmanship. This is a rare and fine grade reference specimen featuring all the premium features for this period and technology. Natural desert wind erosion along with bi-color patina - traits of authentic Acheulian artifacts indicative of long-term exposure on one side as it lay undisturbed and exposed for millennia. In "as found" ORIGINAL condition with NO REPAIR AND NO RESTORATION.
This quartzite handaxe was made and used by early humans of the primitive species Homo erectus (ergaster). It was surface-collected from an exposed Acheulian site in the Sahara Desert of North Africa. This Lower Paleolithic tool represents the first intelligent design type known to science that was made by primitive humans. Prior to these Saharan Acheulian handaxes, only crude pebble and flake tools existed in the human fossil record.
